Brumascope

As its name suggests, the Brumascopeis a machine that generates images on a mist cloud which gets thicker or thinner, this occurring on a musical and visual looping.

This mist screen must be looked at front face, like a miniature theater in three dimensions. The machine produces abstract visuals, a kind of graphic alphabet, which floats in the air.

PROCESS AND TOOLS

My creation is an art piece but it works like a machine. I built it in the "Petit Fablab de Paris" which is one of the first FabLab in Paris. For all the structure I designed the plan with illustrators and cut it with a laser cutter. The laser cutter allowed me to built the structure I want and very thin holes for the mist. For the rest of the machine I hacked common use materials as PVC pipes, fish tank pumps, fish tank, pipes, mist makers and honey jars. The machine is controlled by an arduino uno and a relay module.

This entry is a work of art involving complex and ever-changing mist patterns which are projected in a long narrow tunnel using a projector. It says that "provides very special kind of abstract visuals which can be looked and touched", however I am unsure of how this may be enjoyed through the sense of touch. There are works to project on air for in door and out door use have been around since the 60s, but the fact that this projector is made using Fab is superb. Regarding the sound, I am not sure if the sounds is attached the machine itself or it has been added as background music for the video clip, but it adds a strange dramatic feel to the entry.
