「あいちトリエンナーレ2019」の出展作品です。豊田市中心部の会場において、トヨタ自動車のエンブレムをモチーフにした架空の遺跡をつくり、それを市民の方に発掘してもらいました。僕が豊田市を訪れたときに、トヨタ自動車の本拠地なのにトヨタの広告が全く見当たらず不思議に思った経験をもとに制作しています。みんなで土を掘り起こすことで、豊田市とトヨタと豊田市民の関係性について、文字通り掘り起こすようなことができたら面白いなと思って作りました。

What did you create?

Toyota's advertisement as a ruin with a fictional story about how it would be like if Toyota Motor Corp. made an advertisement in the Jomon era.

Why did you make it?

I was surprised not to find signs of Toyota Motor Corp. when I looked around the city as I walked out of Toyota Station. Many people said that it's taken for granted that Toyota Motor Corp. is based in Toyota City so that the company doesn't have the need to show its signs. My interest in the relationship between the people in Toyota City and Toyota Motor Corp. has grown. I hoped that this project would give me the opportunity to think about the three parties.

How did you make it?

I made a fictional story about how it would be like if Toyota Motor Corp. made an advertisement in the Jomon era. I dug the ground for 45 days. I made the shape of their emblem facing the direction of the headquarters of Toyota Motor Corp.. I filled that trench with soil that was mixed with many Toyota-related products together. After then, Toyota citizens were gathered through public recruitment and they began the excavation process. “Toyota's advertisement as a ruin” was discovered by 14 citizens of Toyota.
