Description

The personality of living things is beautiful. Is it possible to have a personality in the digital world? This is a video work that produces animation by recognizing shader programs as genes and by changing the mathematical expression itself using evolutionary computation. The shader program that I used to generate this video is a coding language that has been widely used by people as a method of CG, VJ, and live coding. For this work, the work itself is a mechanism for describing the shader programs, and in this way, a large number of images can be displayed in grid form. The mathematical formula for each image is controlled by genetic algorithms, and slightly different formulas are randomly generated. Each animation has its own personality and rather than being intentionally generated, they are random or selected results. This is the work of the evolution of a living thing itself. Mathematical formulas like genes now move like artificial life. I tried to see the beauty in the diversity of seeds, of a place beyond human society, in a future where everything is computerized. 2019年制作 水落 大 (https://mizumasa.net/)

What did you create?

The personality of living things is beautiful. Is it possible to have a personality in the digital world? This is a work that realizes a new expression that looks at the diversity of life itself as an image, in which the mathematical program used in computer graphics is regarded as a gene in the image and various patterns are created by rearranging the equation itself. For this work, the work itself is a mechanism for describing the programs, and in this way, a large number of images can be displayed in grid form. I made a three-dimensional video that tries to install the complexity of life into the video.

Why did you make it?

This time, I thought that the beauty of random life itself could be expressed in the digital world, instead of someone changing the gene in the intended direction for evolution. In today's world where diversity is allegedly important, this is also about thinking about our own personality. This time, I noticed that the creation of work creates a richer expanse by not only having a specific intentional personality, but by just feeling the value of being diverse through random behavior. This work has started as video work and three-dimensional work, and has spread as a design tool that allows anyone to express their personality, and has started a business card making workshop using texture patterns. I believe that a new expression that looks at the diversity of life itself as an image will lead to a society where you can enjoy uncertain diversity, not the tolerance of accepting diversity.

How did you make it?

GLSL (OpenGL Shading Language) is a shading language based on C language. In recent years, it has been used for 3D video rendering and video performance such as LiveCoding. Among them, a program called a fragment shader specializes in performing a shadow calculation in units of pixels and consists of equations for calculating each value of RGBA. An attempt was made to model the expressions that make up the fragment shader as a structural tree and generate them automatically. Using the generated images, I created a cubic display using digital cells with mathematical expressions as genes. I assembled a Chinese plywood frame using a laser cutter and fitted a display.
