Description

Vibrating Landscape is an object formed according to a personal nostalgia and everyday desire for an open space. The uniqueness of absolute space in a physical sense is equivalent to uniqueness of the free and unlimited mind as against the isolation of smaller spaces, interiors and shelters of the mind. Personal space is enclosed for the sake of the creation of territory of safety and comfort, personal sound boxes of desirable echoes in which consciousness is limited to the isolated part. The object contains a duality between enclosed space, source of vibrations and simulated open space in which the vibrations generates a kinetic landscape. In the housing of the interior are placed electrical motors that vibrate elastic filaments with various frequencies. The filaments visually lose their linearity and are turned into spindle-shaped forms of different sizes and transparencies, in line with the vibration frequency, overlap and create hum of low frequencies. The various tensions of the filaments produce the diversity of forms. The appearance of the landscape changes in the programmed cycle.

What did you create?

Vibrating Landscape is a responsive kinetic object that contains a duality between enclosed space, source of vibrations and simulated open space in which the vibrations generates a kinetic landscape.

Why did you make it?

Everything that we perceive is nothing but the vibrations that we're dressing in some custom illusory shapes. And it is all even (equally) alive and mechanical. I wanted to expose that fact. The source of vibration are in the interior. The computer inside the box generates different frequencies, depending on the program, and projects vibrations to the threads as a field of opportunity, thus creating a kinetic landscape. The strings sketch dynamic wire-frame form of landscape with planes varying from straight to the breezy surface.

How did you make it?

In the housing of the interior are placed electrical motors that vibrate elastic filaments with various frequencies. The filaments visually lose their linearity and are turned into spindle-shaped forms of different sizes and transparencies, in line with the vibration frequency, overlap and create hum of low frequencies. The various tensions of the filaments produce the diversity of forms. The appearance of the landscape changes in the programmed cycle. The production of the artwork was supported by Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia rent sizes and transparencies, in line with the vibration frequency, overlap and create hum of low frequencies. The various tensions of the filaments produce the diversity of forms. The appearance of the landscape changes in the programmed cycle. The work was technically worked out and produced with associates from the Department of Physics of the Faculty of Science of the University of Zagreb, Leonardo Krleža, a student, and the expert associate in the technical support unit Nenad Mijić. and Kontejner / bureau of contemporary art praxis, Zagreb.

Your entry’s specification

The construction is of steel sections, metal grids and plates on which the electrical motors and electronic parts are fixed. Dimensions: 220 x 106 x 40 cm (W x H x D) Weight: approx. 50 kg Overall power consumption: 420W Power plugs: 1 - 230V / 50Hz The work generates very light whistling sound. It can be heard from distance of up to 4 m. The work requires semi darkened space and dark or darkened background. It should be lightened with one or more spots from above so the surrounding should remain as dark as possible. Upon switching ON, the installation starts to vibrate for a brief period of time, after that it shuts down and awaits movement. When movement is detected by either of the two motion sensors (12 m range, 110° v-angle) the installation starts to vibrate again until no movement has been detected (for a few minutes) or movement lasts longer than 10min. If movement lasts longer than 10 minute installation automatically shuts down for 1 minute.
