What did you create?
「Risveglio」 is acoustic columns that create spatial localization images and physical validity for digital sound wave. It has a distinctive expanse of sounds localization images that are different from usual stereophonic sounds. People will percieve air resonance and tube vibration as physical phenomena similar to when they listen to acoustic musical instruments although sources were designed by electronics way.This system is new instrument for sound waves made by digital technologies adding natural acoustic feelings.And appropriate sound sources were designed. A real violin G string note was used. It has many overtones that were disassembled using FFT processing by MAX/Msp programing. And these overtones are rebuilt in time domain. This method make a kind of melody from only one violin note. Further to realize deep timbre, using AM modulation technique in FFT process that is original developed. To get blurred spectra, phase cross convolution technique was applied.
Why did you make it?
Usually audio speakers can not make spatial sound images because of their simple acoustic characteristics that all frequency waves are radiated almost a single point in a space. 「Risveglio」consists of complex columns and acts like the body of a musical instrument including two small speakers as actuators of sound pressures. Lately there are a lot of digital sounds that are synthesized by DSP etc. From the perspective of cognitive psychology, it is important that material properties are perceived as the basis of sound sources. But these digital sounds don't have material properties. So 「Risveglio」adds air resonances and column vibration as material properties like a musical instrument body. For example, electric vehicle will need sounds as information of its motions instead of an engine. Also self-driving situations, it is important how to keep driver's consciousness. The localization images of 「Risveglio」sounds will act visual cortex according to perceiving position of its sounds in environment. This will keeps our consciousness high level.There are many speakers in our living space, offices, shops, cafes, etc. and they sounds same like a plane screen image. I think that this point makes sounds noisy although it's audio characteristics are not annoyance. It is a time to add spatial images to ordinary everyday sounds.
How did you make it?
「Risveglio」was made of PVC pipes and joints, acrylic pipe + iron stands. It's structures were designed using FEM simulation and connections point of pipes, lengths were determined. Diameters of small speakers as actuator are only 800mm and 1000mm. 「Risveglio」consist of many acoustic columns. They are connected to each other. This connection method was investigated by FEM simulations. The original columns connection method make the cavity of each column independent. So we can design resonance frequency and localization image voluntarily. This is achieved by orthogonal connections and open edges. This result is new knowledge in acoustics engineering field. And pressure of opposite sides of actuators are used.「Risveglio」consist of many acoustic columns. They are connected to each other. This connection method was investigated by FEM simulations.
