Description

This is my final project as a part of my industrial design studies. This project emerged from a formal and material research that centered on stretching wood bark to extreme situations, devising new manipulations of the material and on the production method. The project carries out a technological material research that combines a soft material (foam) with a hard material (veneer) in three- dimensional press molds.

What did you create?

This project emerged from a formal and material research that centered on stretching wood bark to extreme situations, devising new manipulations of the material and on the production method. The project carries out a technological material research that combines a soft material (foam) with a hard material (veneer) in three-dimensional press molds. My research led to the creation of a series of seats based on this technology. resulting in a new seating experience: a softness ostensibly masked by the rigidity of the veneer, but tangible nevertheless, and a new aesthetic that emerged from the process of pressing both materials together.

Why did you make it?

The project was born from a desire to examine veneer — which I began working in the second year of my studies. I wanted to develop a new technique using an unexpected combination of materials, and to lend a new interpretation to the material from which I would be able to design furniture.

How did you make it?

I began the process of my research with a review of the world of wood-bending lamination. I visited factories that bent furniture using this method, and studied their production processes along with the industrial methods employed in this field. I played with veneer and manipulated it, subjecting it to extreme situations, experimenting with how far the veneer could be bent before it cracked.
