Description

A time card punch clock with a video person stuck in a dome on top. As the viewer punches the time cards, the person gets older based on time punch increments. At the last punch the dome goes dark and the cycle begins again. Viewers virtually erase the youth of the person through the passage of time. With each punch the memory of one's childhood is further erased from the dome. It is possible that some viewers may never experience the full length of the piece. The sculpture is a self portrait memorial for the artist. Updated over the years this piece allows us to view different stages of the artists life and hopefully consider the role of time in our own lives. How much of our time is spent at work, with loved ones, online? How do we value these moments?

What did you create?

A time card punch clock with a video person projected into a dome on top. As the viewer punches the time cards, the person gets older based on time punch increments. At the last punch the dome goes dark and is not to be reset until the next day. Viewers virtually erase the youth of the person through the passage of time. With each punch the memory of one's childhood is further erased from the dome. It is possible that some viewers may never experience the full length of the piece.

Why did you make it?

My work is about capturing memories in physical and virtual sculpture. Today we are obsessed with capturing every moment on video or in photos. Our entire lives are encapsulated in our digital memories. This living sculpture is an encapsulation of my life or my forecasted future and past. In a way it is an ever changing time capsule that physically represents my digital life online. As I get older I will continue to update the work with new videos so it may look very different in 40 years.

How did you make it?

The work is created using physical sensors, unity, Arduino, max msp and custom electronics. I teach interactive art at NYU and host a podcast about art and technology so these are things I'm very interested in.
