Description

“PrintCade: Invaders” is a physical interface for the classic arcade game, “Space Invaders”. Built with recycled components such as printers, computer fans, joysticks with arcade buttons, and LED light arrays, the installation creates a physical connection between players and the virtual game system by generating analog sounds created by recycled electronic components acting as outputs. Players blast aliens projected on the wall above the piece while simultaneously creating physical feedback through the control interface that mimics the original 1980s arcade aesthetic. The end result is an aesthetically rich journey into the world of analog interfaces and virtual classic game output.

Why did you make it?

The project was built over out over the past few years in different versions, originally started at a 2 day hack-a-thon during the Transmediale Festival in Berlin, Germany. The artists were interested in recycling used computer and arcade components into a new interface for gaming and playful interaction.

How did you make it?

The project hardware was originally built using open source tools of Processing and Arduino, old printers, joysticks, and discarded electronic and analog components. The hardware interface was created over a 2 day hack-a-thon during the Transmediale Festival in Berlin, Germany.

Your entry’s specification

The project stands on a tripod 4.5 feet tall and 3.5 feet wide. The projector projects to a large screen 15 feet in front of the hardware interface. The room should be low light levels and dark to emphasize the projection. There is a Mac Mini connected to the project and the projector and a bluetooth speaker for sound output.
